Susan is at home preparing a fried chicken dinner for herself and her kids, like she has many times before. Her kitchen is fairly clean, but while she prepares the chicken, she keeps getting interrupted and distracted by the dog and her young children. She removes the raw chicken legs from the packaging, seasons them, and then proceeds to dip them in batter and flour to prepare them for frying. Susan has the oil for her fried chicken heated, but doesn’t have a thermometer to measure the temperature, and has never used one before. She proceeds to fry the chicken and determines that it’s done by the color of the breading. She serves the fried chicken to her family. As she is finishing her second piece, she notices that there is some pink-tinged chicken close to the bone. She feels slightly concerned but brushes it off because the chicken tasted fine. About two days later, Susan’s two-year-old starts having abdominal pain, and diarrhea. As the night progresses he develops a fever and starts vomiting. Susan is extremely concerned and plans on taking her son to the emergency room in the morning if these symptoms keep up. Susan figures it must be something that only her son ate since she and her other children all feel fine. When Susan takes her son to the Emergency Room, they decide to keep him overnight because he is dehydrated. They give him intravenous fluids with electrolyte replacements, and he is sent home the next day when he appears to be doing better. His doctor stresses the importance of keeping him hydrated while waiting for the illness to pass.

The scene will be between yourself and another person or groups of persons, which describes and discusses a specific “Mystery” foodborne illness. In your scene, you will 1. Describe the setting (kitchen at home or restaurant) , 2. the conditions of the setting (clean looking, dirty etc), 3. who is in your group (Who are the characters in your scenario), 4 your role in this scenario (What do you do?) 5. Explain problem: foods eaten, symptoms etc. only. Do not reveal the foodborne pathogen or intoxicant that you have in mind. Be as specific as you can be so that the other students reponding to your post can identify the culprit.

Response: Other students’ responses will attempt to deduce the organism(s) responsible for the problem. Each student will select 1 scenario to “solve” and include references. You will state what you think the culprit is and how you came to that conclusion.
